Close your eyes, wherever you are. Bring to mind your favorite place. It can be a forest, a beach, a couch at home, the kitchen table where you grew up, the top of a mountain, your favorite park . . . Let whatever sticks to your mind first be the one. In your mind, hear the sounds of the leaves rustling, waves lapping, wind blowing . . . smell the air, see the details. Take yourself there.

See what you would be wearing, what your skin would look like, how your hair would be. Imagine who would be with you, or if you would be alone. Let your mind fill with any and all details about the place. Literally, be there.

Stay with this place in your mind, eyes closed and breathing, for as long as you can, or would like to. When you open your eyes, decide to carry this vision with you.

Do this regularly enough so that the image becomes crystal clear in your mind. When the shit hits the fan the next day at home or at work, or you just can’t deal anymore, you can take yourself to that place in your mind. You may start to notice that this becomes your mental chaise longue on the beach.
